roam is a new online literary journal for writers and readers who long to explore the untraveled paths. It exists so that writers, placed at a common starting point, can journey toward conclusions only they can reach; and so that readers may enjoy the paths in between.
For each issue, we will lay out prompts for potential submitters to unravel, including one image prompt. Pick one, pick a few: We just want to read your work.
For our first issue, we are looking for submissions of short fiction (up to 2,000 words) and poetry that strive to fill this gap, make sense of the unknown. There are mysteries in this world and beyond it, and they’re worth seeking.
Here are several prompts to choose from when considering submitting to roam:
- The coldest body of water in the country
- A new take on an old fairy tale – where does morality lie in this day and age?
- It’s the only flavor she likes
In addition to these, you may also choose to write something based on this image:
Please send your fiction and poetry to firstname.lastname@example.org in a Microsoft Word document with the subject line “Submission: [your name].” Include which prompt(s) you selected to write about. Since this is our first issue, we don’t have a concrete publication date yet — but we will get back to you as soon as we can about your work. Simultaneous submissions are okay, just let us know if it gets picked up elsewhere!
We can’t wait to read what you cook up.
Submission deadline: May 1
